Many communicators have to update or modify the skills acquired or having to learn new skills to get the job that they want. It is important to have good communication skills, and for future employment, it is essential to have as a candidate for a position in a company. Employers believe that Good Business Communication can help communicators get the job they desire.

Leigh Richards’ article, Why employers want good business communication, states, “Good business communication is important for any business, and employers know that if they can improve communication in their organizations they can reap benefits including improved employee satisfaction, increased customer satisfaction, the generation of positive word-of-mouth and employees who serve as ambassadors in the community. A focus on ensuring good business communication can reap many benefits for employers.” (Richards, Chron.com)

The lessons learned for communicators is to improve skills and learn new opportunities to become better in the field. Employers are looking for communicators to have excellent communication skills. Here are some tips:

In the article, What Do Employers Mean When They Ask for Excellent Communication Skills, Ruth Mayhew states, “Look at any job postings and excellent communication skills are likely to be among the qualifications that employers seem to value. Even for jobs with limited interaction with the public, employees need communication skills to build collaborative relationships with their coworkers and bridge the gap between their positions and positions that their supervisors and managers hold. However, even though excellent written skills are frequently required, there’s no real definition of what employers really want.” (Mayhew, Chron.com)

How new media has affected the world of Journalism

When I graduated as an undergrad, I knew that things would change in the world of journalism. While I was attaining for my Broadcast Journalism degree, I learned how to edit videotapes and how to look for news stories that would be “interesting” to put on news television. Since I have graduated in the mid 2000’s, communicators like journalists rely on new media technologies and being able to connect to the news through social media. Technology has changed over the years for journalists, but the new technology has made it easier and faster for journalists to broadcast effectively.

In the article, Journalism in the digital age: trends, tools, and technologies, it explains: “The growth of easy digital publishing technology brings with it new ethical dilemmas for journalists. Whenever a young person is in the news, Facebook or other similar social networks are usually a ready source of images. No longer does the news desk have to wait for a family to choose a cherished photo to hand over. A journalist can now lift photographs straight from social networking sites, and often, in the most tragic cases, newspapers republish tributes to lost friends that have been posted online.” (Belam, 2010)

Although technology has improved, the way how technology has changed communication is through accessibility and being able to access articles or news-related stories.

In Nayab’s article, How Communication has evolved with new technologies, it states: “Technology has brought down the costs of communication significantly and improved people’s access. The proliferation of online forums, live coverage of news, and other such media-related initiatives have resulted in world wide access and participation in news and information for almost everyone.” (Nayab, 2014)

Elizabeth Lee’s article, Internet, Technology offer new tools for journalists, explains how Director of the School of Journalism Willow Bay believes that the students at The University of Southern California Annenburg School of Journalism will learn how to deliver news across all platforms, including TV, Radio, and the Web.

“Today we expect journalists to be able to use all sorts of technological tools to research stories, to vet that research, to analyze that research. We expect them to be fluid in multimedia storytelling skills. We expect them increasingly to be their own marketing and distribution arms, to get their stories in front of audiences and to spread those stories as far as they can,” said Bay (Lee, 2014)

Digital Journalists Professor Robert Hernandez said future journalists must also be tech-savvy, and that meant learning basic computer programming languages. He states, “You can do a 360 panorama through your phone. We can talk about what a tornado looks like, how it rips trees out of the ground. Through their phone there’s an app (application) that stitches them together.” (Lee, 2014)

New Media such as media devices, social networks and others have generated a new form of communication for Communicators. Technology has changed the way we use communication and how it affects us socially and within the workforce. The development of new technological devices has produced new evolution of advancement toward communication. One new way of new technology helping the workforce is within the internet and using emails.

In the article, How Communication has evolved with new technologies, it explains how technology impacts the Internet.

“The most significant impact of technology on communication is the spread of the Internet and the possibility of sending emails and chatting. Computers and the Internet have made the process of creating and editing documents and applying features such as spell check and grammar check automatically easy and natural.” (Nayab, 2014)

The rise of new media devices such as tablets, cellphones and others has helped the workplace by being able to communicate and process information faster and quicker while being on the go. In an article excerpt from Natalie Burg’s How Technology Has Changed Workplace Communication, it states:

“The better that mobile technology becomes, and the more employers embrace the bring your own device (BYOB) to work philosophy, the more deeply connected workers become to their workplaces, which exist on the same devices as their social networks and family photos.” (Burg, 2013)
